Paintings by Doug Bewall will be on display July 26 – October 31 in the gallery space of Curry Public Library. On Sunday, July 26 at 1:30pm, join Dianne Daniels, wife of the late artist Doug Bewall, for refreshments and to learn about his life and work.
Doug Bewall was born in the Mission District of San Francisco as 1938 began. Shortly thereafter, he took his first voyage, albeit a short one, across the bay on the ferry to Oakland, where he would spend his childhood. Restless and anxious to see the world, Doug joined the Navy on his 17th birthday, January 2, 1955.
Doug’s 25 years in the Navy took him around the world. He spent these years exploring the places he was homeported and visited. While his duties kept him too busy to act upon his desire to paint, Doug saw the works of masters in many of the ports of call. He visited museums and carefully examined the techniques down to the brush strokes used. As he landed ashore in Hawaii for his final duty station after a career mostly at sea, Doug began to paint with oils on canvas/linen. Self-taught, he voraciously read books on painting and art publications. Gradually, Doug built his skills, playing with colors and techniques. During his 40 years as an artist, he went through several styles and themes in his art.
From expansive views of seas, shores, and landscapes, to the beauty of detailed, realistic representations of their small parts, Doug enjoyed documenting and sharing his view of the world through his art during the last 40 years of his life. Doug hoped his art would live on in places around the world and across America bringing a different perspective of the beauty of nature.
Doug’s life journey took him all over the world; he saw and experienced it through the eyes of a Sailor…and the heart of an artist.
