Afterschool Program Background and Overview:

The Curry Public Library After School Program is a collaboration between Curry Public Library (CPL) and the Central Curry School District 1 (CCSD1.) It offers a safe, structured, and supervised quality after school programming for students in 6-8 grade at Riley Creek School in Gold Beach. Programming will: 1) provide opportunities for enrichment and tutoring to help students meet state standards in language arts and mathematics through structured study time and tutoring assistance from staff, volunteers, and high school mentors; 2) work with community partners to offer an array of activities to broaden horizons and promote learning; 3) help students navigate the transition from middle to high school through a bridge program; and 4) promote meaningful dialogue with students’ families, including opportunities for parents and guardians to develop skills to engage in students’ academic lives. We expect this program to improve the overall health, well-being, and achievement of the participating students.

The after school program is built around the idea of extending students’ learning day and placing them in the safe and welcoming Library Learning Center (LLC) space. In this space, we believe it will be possible to engage both students and parents to meet the stakeholder identified goals outlined in this proposal by utilizing proven techniques for instruction, active learning, and evaluation.

The program, which has an annual budget of approximately $250,000 per year will be held 4-days-a-week for 2.5 hours per day (3:30 pm-6:00 pm) during regular school days. On any weekdays when there is no school, the program will operate from 9-5 (except for federal holidays). On early dismissal days, the program will start at 12:00 pm when school releases, and run until 6:00 pm. During the 2018-19 school year, this schedule totals 624.5 hours of active programming, or 18 extra school weeks.

Programming will be delivered 3-days-a-week at CPL and 2-days-a-week at Riley Creek School. This will give participants access to the educational and technological resources of the library, while utilizing the existing gymnasium and fields at Riley Creek for physical recreation.

To ensure that all students have the best possible outcomes, the program will provide programming and activities that appeal to many different learning styles. Students will have the ability to select activities during their exploratory learning time block. Students will also have the opportunity to shape the ASCEND program by participating in a monthly student-led program design group, attending quarterly stakeholder meetings, or submitting a suggestion into a suggestion box that will be present at all times.

Students will either walk from Riley Creek School to CPL, a distance of just under a half a mile, or ride the provided bus. All students will be provided the opportunity to ride the school bus home, or be picked up by a parent or guardian. During the 4-week summer program, students will be provided pick-up and drop-off services via school busses. Food service for after school snacks will be provided by CCSD1 food service staff. They will be responsible for designing the menu, procuring, preparing, and delivering the snacks daily. All snacks will meet USDA health and nutrition guidelines.
